Useless Crib matress
We bought the Stokke sleepy system, because friends of us had it and we loved the design immediately. The crib system is of very high quality manufacturing and everything fits seemless. The problems comes with the 2 matresses which are sold separately. This is strange and new, because they used to be part of the system. The larger mattress is normal and meets expectations. However, the small one for the newborn bassinet is unacceptable. We were very surprised to see that the newborn mattress for the infant was only 1 inch in thickness. This is not acceptable, because even a newborn will feel the wood surface below. in addition, the cover sheet is too small, so the mattress is not even lying flat on the wooden surface of the crib. Stokke mattress set worked just fine
We've had our daughter on the full range of Stokke mattresses from bassinet to crib to toddler bed. She did just fine on all of them. The rounded corners have both pros and cons: they look good and there are no sharp corners for little ones to run into, but putting a fitted sheet on takes twice as long as for a regular mattress. You get better at it after a while, but the lack of square corners slows down changing the linens.
Stokke mini
After reading many reviews on the mini mattress that were negative, I called Stokke directly to see if there was another vendor that made the mattress. There is not. Stokke stands behind Colgate (mattress manufacture) and said that they have not changed their design since the product was introduced and the mattress was acceptable for a new baby to sleep on. I have to agree. I think that we in the US love our cushy mattresses, but in Europe it is just not the same. This is a European designed crib and it does not surprise me that the mattress for a small baby is thinner that what we would normally consider acceptable. I chose to pad it a bit more, I placed the organic mattress pad/protector on it and the Stokke sheet on top. Fits great. The mattress is a bit squished in the sheets but I have confidence that it will even/stretch out. Bottom line, if you purchased the crib you have to have a mattress. This will be acceptable. I love the cirb and feel it will be in our family...
